چکیده

Near-isotropic pyrolytic carbon containing a small amount of co-deposited silicon carbide has been used for years as the materials from which prosthetic heart valves are fabricated [ 1 ]. Silicon carbide was introduced into this material to increase the hardness and thereby the wear resistance of the material. Silicon carbide, however, has poor thromboresistance relative to pyrolytic carbon, so its removal might improve the thromboresistance of the material.

Mechanical heart valves: 50 years of evolution.

The past 50 years have witnessed remarkable progress in the development of safe, hemodynamically favorable mechanical heart valves. Starr-Edwards aortic and mitral ball valves introduced in the mid-1960s, continue to be used successfully worldwide. More than 100,000 Omniscience and Omnicarbon tilting-disc valves have been implanted since 1978 with essentially no mechanical failure; similar resu...

Biological and functional evaluation of a novel pyrolytic carbon implant for the treatment of focal osteochondral defects in the medial femoral condyle: assessment in a canine model

BACKGROUND Osteochondral defects continue to be a clinical treatment challenge, and when left untreated, may cause pain and functional impairment. Pyrolytic carbon is a unique isotropic biomaterial used in heart valve and small joint replacements due to its excellent wear properties and biocompatibility with bone and articular cartilage. Therefore, a proposed solution is to utilize a focal pyro...

Sheep, pig, and human platelet-material interactions with model cardiovascular biomaterials.

The relationship between cardiovascular device performance in animals and humans is not straightforward. As the principal formed element in a thrombus, platelets play a major role in determining the hemocompatibility of mechanical heart valves and other high-shear-rate cardiovascular devices. Since larger animals are required to test many such devices, sheep and porcine platelet responses were ...

Editorial Valve in Valve Another Milestone for Transcatheter Valve Therapy

The first mechanical heart valve prosthesis, designed by Dr Charles Hufnagel, was implanted to the descending aorta of a 30-year-old woman with severe aortic regurgitation in 1952.1 Eight years after the initial successful prosthetic valve implantation, Dr Harken sutured a prosthetic valve (Starr Edwards Valve) to the aortic annulus after removing the diseased native valve. During the ensuing y...

Porcine heart valves produce a protein that induces cell-mediated connective tissue degradation: II. Biochemical properties of the partially purified protein.

A cardiac catabolic factor (CCF) has been partially purified from serum-free medium conditioned by minced porcine heart valves. CCF was prepared by a series of chromatographic techniques and compared directly with porcine synovial catabolin purified by the same protocol. CCF displayed a somewhat higher molecular weight (Mr 21,000) and isoelectric point (pI 5.2) than did synovial catabolin (Mr 1...
